The TEAS 7 Science Ambush: Chemistry and Biology Topics You MUST Know

A study desk setup showing chemistry beakers, an anatomical heart and lung model, and ATI TEAS 7 Science study checklists for biology and chemistry.

You spent the last eight weeks meticulously memorizing every single bone in the human body. You can perfectly trace the exact drop of blood as it travels through the heart’s chambers and valves. You sit down at the testing center, confidently open the TEAS 7 Science section… and the very first question asks you to balance a chemical equation.

Panic sets in. Welcome to the TEAS 7 Science Ambush.

The Anatomy Comfort Zone

While Anatomy and Physiology make up a large portion of the ATI TEAS 7 Science section, many students fail because they are ambushed by complex Chemistry and Biology questions. To pass, you must understand macromolecules, mitosis and meiosis, genetics and Punnett squares, chemical bonding (ionic vs. covalent), states of matter, and acid-base balance.

It is incredibly common to fall into this trap. Anatomy is fun. It feels like “real nursing.” You want to be a nurse, so studying the cardiovascular and respiratory systems feels highly relevant to your future career. Chemistry and cellular biology, on the other hand, feel like a high school nightmare that you would rather ignore.

But the test-makers do not care about your comfort zone. The TEAS 7 blueprint heavily emphasizes basic biological and chemical principles, and if you ignore them, you will bleed easy points.

Here is exactly what you need to study to survive the ambush.

The Biology Ambush: What You Cannot Ignore

Do not let the microscopic world cost you your passing score. You must be able to visualize and understand these core biological processes:

  • Macromolecules: You need to know the building blocks of life. Understand the structure and primary functions of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

  • Genetics & Heredity: Do not skip this! You must know how to set up and read a Punnett square. Understand the difference between dominant and recessive traits, genotypes vs. phenotypes, and the basics of Mendel’s laws of inheritance.

  • Cellular Reproduction: You will be tested on the exact differences between mitosis and meiosis. Know which process creates identical somatic (body) cells and which creates unique gametes (sex cells), including the number of chromosomes involved in each.

The Chemistry Ambush: High-Yield Topics

Chemistry is usually the most feared section of the TEAS 7, but it is highly predictable. If you master the rules, you can answer these questions in seconds.

  • Atomic Structure & The Periodic Table: You must understand the anatomy of an atom. Know how to find protons, neutrons, and electrons, and understand atomic number versus atomic mass. You also need to know how to read the basic trends of the periodic table.

  • Chemical Bonds: You will be tested on how atoms interact. Master the clear distinction between ionic bonds(transferring electrons) and covalent bonds (sharing electrons).

  • Acids and Bases: This is a vital concept for nursing school! Understand the pH scale (0 to 14). Know what makes a solution acidic versus alkaline, and understand how this relates to the human body (for example, normal blood pH is tightly regulated between 7.35 and 7.45).

The Blueprint Reality

Here is the hard truth about the TEAS 7: every single question is worth the same amount of points.

A missed question about covalent bonds hurts your overall Science score exactly as much as a missed question about the left ventricle of the heart. You cannot rely purely on A&P to carry your score across the finish line. You must have a balanced, strategic approach to the entire blueprint.

Stop Hiding from Chemistry and Biology

Stop hiding from the Chemistry and Biology sections. We take these abstract, confusing topics and break them down into easy-to-understand, color-coded visual maps. You do not need to read a 500-page chemistry textbook; you just need the verified, high-yield facts.
