Conquering TEAS 7 Alternate Item Types

The ATI TEAS 7 includes Alternate Item Types such as Select All That Apply (SATA), Hot Spots, Ordered Responses, and Fill-in-the-Blank questions, which can make up to 15% of your total exam. Because ATI does not offer partial credit for these questions, you must use specific strategies to answer them, such as treating every SATA option as an isolated True/False statement. Note that Fill-in-the-Blank questions only appear in the Math section.

The ATI TEAS 7 recently received a massive upgrade to mirror the new Next-Gen NCLEX format. This means you will no longer just see standard, four-option multiple-choice questions on your exam.

In fact, up to 15% of your entire exam can be made up of Alternate Item Types (AITs). And to rip the band-aid off quickly: no, there is absolutely no partial credit. If a question has three correct answers and you only select two, you get a zero for the entire question. But do not panic. These questions are simply logic puzzles, and here is exactly how to mechanical hack each one of them.

Select All That Apply (SATA): The True/False Hack

SATA questions are the most feared item on the entire exam.

The Trap: Students look at all five or six options at the exact same time, their brain gets completely overwhelmed by the amount of information, and they start second-guessing themselves into choosing incorrect combinations.

The Hack: You must turn one giant question into five mini-questions. Physically cover up the answers with your hand on the screen. Read the core question. Then, uncover only Option A and ask yourself: “Is this statement True or False based on the prompt?” Make your decision. Then, completely ignore Option A, look at Option B, and ask, “Is this statement True or False?” Evaluate every single option in complete isolation.

Hot Spot Questions (Click the Image)

For Hot Spot questions, ATI will display a visual diagram—such as a drawing of the human heart, the digestive system, or a cell structure—and ask you to physically click your mouse on the correct anatomical area.

The Strategy: You cannot just rely on flashcard vocabulary definitions for the Science section. You must brush up on visual anatomy maps. If you know the definition of the right atrium but can’t point to it on a blank diagram, you will miss the question.

Ordered Response (Drag and Drop Timelines)

Ordered Response questions require you to click and drag a list of steps into the correct chronological order. You might be asked to order the path of blood as it flows through the heart, the steps of the scientific method, or the logical sequence of the writing process.

The Strategy: Find your definitive anchors first. Look at the list and immediately identify the absolute first step and the absolute final step. Once you lock in the beginning and the end of the timeline, organizing the middle steps becomes significantly easier.

Fill-in-the-Blank (Math Only)

Let’s drop a massive sigh of relief right here: you will not have to type out complex, perfectly spelled science vocabulary words.

Fill-in-the-Blank questions are exclusively used in the Math section. You will be given a calculation and an empty text box to type your final numerical answer into.

The Strategy: Because there are no multiple-choice options to guide you or hint that you made a calculation error, you must be incredibly precise. Always double-check your decimal placement before typing your final number and hitting submit!
