How Many Questions are on the ATI TEAS 7? (Full Subject Breakdown)

A graphic displaying the text 'How Many Questions are on the ATI TEAS 7? (Full Subject Breakdown)'. Below the text is a card showing '170 Questions' divided into four color-coded subjects: Reading, Math, Science, and English. Next to it is a large red stopwatch that reads '209 MINUTES'.

The ATI TEAS 7 Exam Structure and Time Limits

The ATI TEAS 7 consists of 170 total questions to be completed in 209 minutes. The exam is broken down into four sections: Reading (45 questions, 55 minutes), Math (38 questions, 57 minutes), Science (50 questions, 60 minutes), and English & Language Usage (37 questions, 37 minutes). This total includes 20 unscored pre-test questions.

The very first rule of passing the TEAS 7 is knowing exactly what you are up against. You cannot possibly build a successful study plan or pacing strategy if you don’t know the clock.

If you are just starting your nursing school journey, the anxiety of the unknown is completely normal. How long will you be sitting in that testing chair? How many science questions do you actually have to answer? Let’s cut through the fluff and look at the exact, updated numerical breakdown of the official ATI TEAS 7 blueprint so you can start preparing with confidence.

The Master Breakdown (Questions & Seconds)

The exam is a 3.5-hour marathon broken down into four distinct subjects. Here is exactly how many questions you will face, how long you have to answer them, and your exact time limit per question:

  • Reading: 45 Questions | 55 Minutes (73 seconds per question)

  • Math: 38 Questions | 57 Minutes (Exactly 90 seconds per question)

  • Science: 50 Questions | 60 Minutes (Exactly 72 seconds per question)

  • English & Language Usage: 37 Questions | 37 Minutes (Exactly 60 seconds per question)

What are "Unscored Pre-Test" Questions?

If you look closely at the official ATI blueprint, you will notice a massive trap. Out of the 170 total questions on your exam, only 150 of them actually count toward your final score. The other 20 questions are what ATI calls “unscored pre-test” questions. These are experimental questions that the test-makers are testing out on you to see if they should include them on future versions of the exam.

The Catch: ATI mixes these 20 fake questions in seamlessly with the real ones. You will never be told which questions are graded and which ones are experimental.

The Strategy: You must treat every single question as if your nursing school acceptance depends on it. Do not try to guess which questions are the fakes; simply do your best on every single prompt.

The Pacing Reality

Looking at the breakdown above, you can immediately see where students struggle the most with time management.

The Math section gives you the most breathing room, allowing a full 90 seconds to work through formulas and calculations. However, the final section—English & Language Usage—is a blistering sprint. You have exactly 60 seconds to read, analyze, and answer each grammar question. Because this is the final section of a 3.5-hour test, your brain will already be exhausted. Pacing is absolutely everything.

Your Action Plan for Test Day

Knowing the time limits is only half the battle; you have to train your brain to actually beat the clock.

You cannot afford to figure out your pacing on test day.
