  1. Skeletal muscle contraction
  2. Helps Immune System
  3. ATP Formation
  4. Direct relationship with sodium
  5. Activation of minerals

Question 2: The nurse is caring for a patient who received excessive administration of magnesium intravenously. The patient has developed hypermagnesemia. What are the signs and symptoms would the nurse expect to find with this condition?

  1. Diminished or absent deep tendon reflexes
  2. Tachycardia
  3. Hypertension
  4. Hyperreflexia

Question 3: The nurse is reviewing the electrocardiogram changes for his or her hypermagnesemia patient. What might the nurse expect to find with these electrolyte changes? SELECT ALL THAT APPLY

  1. Shortened PR interval
  2. Prolonged PR interval
  3. Widened QRS complexes
  4. Shortened QRS complexes

Question 4: A nurse is preparing discharge education for a hypermagnesemia patient. Which education would the nurse provide upon discharge? SELECT ALL THAT APPLY

  1. Discontinue medications that cause magnesium loss
  2. Prescribed use of diuretics for renal insufficiency patients

HYPERMAGNESEMIA NCLEX QUIZ ANSWERS

Question 1: The nurse preceptor is working with a graduate nurse on a PCU. They are caring for a hypermagnesemia patient due to renal insufficiency. The nurse preceptor asked the graduate nurse what are the main functions of magnesium?  SELECT ALL THAT APPLY

  1. Skeletal muscle contraction
  2. Helps Immune System
  3. ATP Formation
  4. Direct relationship with sodium
  5. Activation of minerals

Magnesium helps with skeletal muscle contraction, helps the immune system, ATP formation, cellular growth, regulates blood glucose levels, and carbohydrate metabolism. Magnesium has a direct relationship with calcium and potassium not sodium. Magnesium helps with vitamin activation not minerals.

High magnesium level patients would exhibit diminished or absent deep tendon reflexes. Magnesium is unable to maintain order causing everything to slow down. The nurse would also see bradycardia, hypotension, cardiac dysrhythmias, and skeletal muscle weakness.

Question 3: The nurse is reviewing the electrocardiogram changes for his or her hypermagnesemia patient. What might the nurse expect to find with these electrolyte changes? SELECT ALL THAT APPLY

  1. Shortened PR interval
  2. Prolonged PR interval
  3. Widened QRS complexes
  4. Shortened QRS complexes

Typically, electrocardiogram findings for hypermagnesemia patients include prolonged PR intervals and widened QRS complexes. Magnesium is unable to maintain order causing everything to slow down.

  3. Discontinue use of laxatives and antacids
  4. Limit fluid intake
  5. Limit intake of magnesium rich foods

It is important to discontinue medications that cause Magnesium excess like laxatives and antacids. It is important to continue taking medications that cause magnesium loss. Limiting intake of magnesium rich foods such as green, leafy vegetables and avocados will help decrease magnesium. Limiting fluid intake will not help with hypermagnesemia.

Question 5: Which of the following lab values would the nurse expect to see with a hypermagnesemia patient? SELECT ALL THAT APPLY

  1. Hyperkalemia
  2. Hyponatremia
  3. Hypophosphatemia
  4. Hypercalcemia

Magnesium also has an indirect relationship with phosphorus. If the magnesium is high, the phosphorous will be low. Magnesium has a direct relationship to potassium and calcium. If the magnesium is high, the potassium and calcium will both be high.
