Question 5 of 8
5. Question
Shelley’s poem “Mont Blanc” focuses on the Romantic notion of the sublime. The Romantic poets believed that when people interacted with Nature, it sometimes caused them to be in a state of wonder-or it caused them to be awestruck. For example, when a person gazed at a mountain, the huge size of the mountain could cause the person to become speechless with wonder. This was the effect that the sublime quality of Nature could have on a viewer.
In “Mont Blanc,” Shelley describes the mountain in a way that attempts to explain its effects on the viewer’s mind. According to Shelley, the mountain itself causes the viewer’s thoughts to enter a kind of strange trance, and to be affected in a way that resembles how a poet or an artist feels whenever he or she is caught in the midst of a creative inspiration. In the poem, Shelley draws a comparison between the effect of the mountain on the viewer and the power that the imagination has over the artist’s mind.
What theme is expressed in the passage above?

The way that scientists have envisioned the makeup of the universe has shifted and transformed as the centuries have passed. Prior to the work of Copernicus, people believed that the earth was at the center of the universe. The idea that the earth revolved around the sun was initially taken as heresy. The progression and gradual acceptance of these originally controversial ideas paved the way for the acceptance of later discoveries by Newton and Einstein. Their theories have revolutionized the ways in which science itself is conducted today.
Is changing mindsets a topic, main idea, supporting detail, or theme of the above passage?
Correct
The correct answer is D. Changing mindsets is a theme of this passage, not the topic. The topic is not focused on changing mindsets but, more specifically, on scientific views of the universe.

Based on context, which of the following is the definition of the underlined word in the sentences above?
Correct
The correct answer is B. While sub- is often used as a prefix meaning “under” or “below,” in such words as subpar or submarine, this is not the way the prefix is being used in this excerpt, as indicated by the second sentence, which speaks of awe and wonder. Since sublime is equated with causing awe and wonder, its definition in this context most nearly means truly inspirational.
